This month we are introducing Janice Short from our Peterlee office. Janice is a Chartered Legal Executive and joined DMA Law in 2008 to work in the Family Department, dealing with all aspects of matrimonial and family work.

In 2012, Janice obtained Resolution accreditation specialising in Private Children Law and Domestic Abuse.

Get to know Janice:

Why did you want to work in law?

I don’t really know, but I started as a secretary to two legal executives and enjoyed the work.

For how long have you practised law?

I qualified in 1996.

What is your practice area?

Family law and life planning.

What type of cases do you generally handle?

I usually handle family law cases and wills.

What motivates you?

Being busy motivates me.

If you could job swap with anybody for a week, what would you do?

Genealogy – heir hunter, also known as family history. It’s the study of families and the tracing of their history.  Heir hunters also help people track down lost family members or people who may be in line to inherit something of a deceased relative.

Are you a member or any clubs, societies or charities?

Outside of work, I am the secretary of the Friends of Houghton Hillside Cemetery and Murton Colliery Club. The Friends of Houghton Hillside Cemetery is a volunteer group which maintains and restores the cemetery, promotes the history of the site and also assists others in genealogy.

If you had to choose a famous person to take with you to a desert island, who would you take and why?

I have no idea, but someone with a good personality and good humour.

Describe your proudest accomplishments in your career.

Initially qualifying as it was a long process and then attaining the Resolution accreditation.

How do you define success?

Achieving what you aim for is success to me.

What are your hobbies?

Genealogy, reading and football.

What book are you reading at the moment?

Outlander, the third book.

What show are you enjoying on TV?

I have just finished watching The Handmaid’s Tale.
