This month get to know a bit more about Helen Appleby.
Helen is a solicitor and joined the DMA Law firm working from our Consett office in June 2017.
Having spent several years training and working in many parts of the country and abroad, Helen specialises in all aspects of residential property including freehold and leasehold sales and purchases, transfers of equity, re-mortgages, right to buy, lost title deeds, landlord and tenant matters and adverse possession.

Why did you want to work in law?
I wanted to do something that would challenge me every day.
For how long have you practised law?
My first fee earning role was as a part-time paralegal in 2009 alongside studying at university.
What is your practice area?
What type of cases do you generally handle?
All types of residential property transactions, sales, purchases, re-mortgages, lease extensions, tenancy agreements, adverse possession etc.
What motivates you?
Happy clients motivate me!
If you could job swap with anybody for a week, what would you do?
I have always wanted to be (but would no doubt fail at) being a dolphin trainer.
Are you a member or any clubs, societies or charities?
I am a member of Rock Choir, a national choir which has local divisions across the UK. We performed at the Edinburgh festival last year and recorded at Abbey Road Studios.
If you had to choose a famous person to take with you to a desert island, who would you take and why?
I’ve no idea. Anyone who knows me will tell you I am useless at naming celebrities!
Describe your proudest accomplishments in your career.
Qualifying as a solicitor has to be the best accomplishment in my career.
How do you define success?
Fulfilment professionally and personally.
What are your hobbies?
In my spare time, I enjoy swimming, travelling and the odd upcycling project.
What book are you reading at the moment?
I’ve just finished George Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris. It’s a memoir of his time living among the poor in Paris and his experience of working in restaurant kitchens.
What show are you enjoying on TV?
Poldark!
